SHILLONG: KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum has favoured amendment of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Council) Rules, 1951 to debar the Garos residing in the Khasi Hills from participating (contesting as well as voting) in KHADC elections. “I do not see any justification that the Garos should have the privilege to vote or contest in the election of the Council since they already have their own council (GHADC) to protect and safeguard their interest,” Nongrum said. Agartala: 83 percent poll turnout was recorded during by-election at 91 seats including Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samities, ADC Village Committees, ZIlla Parishads and Nagar Panchayat on Wednesday, June 19, State Election Commissioner Kishore Ambuly said. Interacting with the media at civil secretariat here today, State Election Commissioner Ambuly said that preliminary statistics collected from concerned Returning Officers (RO) over the by-election has pegged the average turnout at 83 percent. Aizawl: Mizo National Front, the largest and oldest regional party in Mizoram, unveiled a “brand new” economic policy codenamed SEDP (socio-economic development programme), ahead of the state assembly polls scheduled for November this year. “The SEDP basically aims to make Mizoram economically self-sufficient in agriculture and power,” MNF president and former chief minister Zoramthanga said as he unveiled the policy at Vanapa Hall here today. DIMAPUR: The otherwise noisy and chaotic commercial hub of Nagaland looked deserted today with all the roaring business establishments came to sa grinding halt following the dawn to dusk bandh imposed by Action Committee Against Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) under the aegis of Naga Council, Dimapur. IMPHAL: Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh Tuesday clarified in Manipur assembly that the reported misuse of huge amount of money by two officials of Relief and Disaster Management was unfounded. Guwahati : Assam has recorded the uncertain distinction of having the highest rate of incidences of crime against women in the North East and is ranked seventh in the country, according to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Assam recorded 13,544 incidents of crime against women during the last one year and was ranked seventh in the country. West Bengal tops the list with 30,942 such cases, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 28,171 cases, UP 23,569, Rajasthan 21,106, Madhya Pradesh 16,832 and Maharashtra 16,353. SHILLONG: Police personnel from Assam on Monday morning arrested two Khasi labourers at Nongdron near Langpih in West Khasi Hills. The labourers identified as Skendro L Mawnai (68) and Twendro L Mawnai (70) were planting betel nut and ginger in the fields at Nongdron when police from Assam took them into custody. The labourers who hail from Mawnai Village near Mairang were at Nongdron to work on the land that belonged to a person from Nongstoin. The reason for the arrest is yet to be ascertained. AIZAWL: The Mizoram government on Saturday underlined the need for security-related expenditure (SRE) in Mizoram, which is sandwiched between Myanmar and Bangladesh. At a meeting here, Mizoram’s chief secretary informed the OSD, Anil Goswami, that the SRE from the ministry of home affairs excluded Mizoram on the ground that it was a peaceful state. Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced compensation of Rs.5 lakh each to the three people who tested HIV-positive after receiving blood from a state-run hospital, and said the government would bear the expenses for their treatment. The Assam government had already instituted a one-man inquiry commission by the state’s Additional Chief Secretary P.P. Varma into the incident. The probe report is to be submitted to the state government in a month.
